Virtual Senior Games a hit for local care homes
After 4 days of fantastic competition between 6 care homes in Swindon, Guinness Care (Prince Rupert Court) took home the prize, becoming the first ever winners of the Senior Games in Swindon.
The games, consisting of Tin Can Alley, Foam Javelin, Golf putting and Target Mat throwing presented an opportunity to over 50 local care home residents a chance to test out their skills. Some amazing results were seen over the 4 activities with every care home recording some incredible scores. A notable one was a resident who threw the javelin a whopping 9.2m.
As well as testing out the resident’s skills, the games offered a chance to have a little bit of fun during these challenging times. One care home activity provider said “I have not seen any of our customers have that much fun since lockdown began. When one of our players was playing the golf, which he had to do sat down, he was holding the club back to front and that caused so much laughter that they had to stop for 5 minutes to get composure again!” Another care home said, “It was an amazing initiative, a great challenge and utterly fun entertainment.”
In 2021 it is planned to hold an in person games and all the care homes have already expressed how they cannot wait to take part again. Swindon Sports Forum plans to run the event bigger and better with more care homes and their residents able to take part. A big thank you to; Lansdowne Hill, Ladymead Care, Park View, Guinness Care, Ridgeway Rise and Hurst House for taking part and for making the games a huge success.
